It's hard to say what's a more emotional subject for Texans, barbecue or politics.

Over the years we've tried to keep the Posse blog free of partisan politics, there are plenty of other places on the web where you can endlessly argue that subject. But when it comes the BBQ, strong loyalties and opinions have been shared between writers and readers on the Posse blog over the past five years.

Nothing gets BBQ fanatics going like a list of the "top" BBQ joints in Texas. We saw this once again when Gary Jacobson wrote More evidence that Lockhart has lost its barbecue magic last week. He shared the top five lists of several of the Posse members who went on our recent Houston BBQ tour. Some of our readers agreed, others didn't. That's how Texas barbecue goes.......

Just for fun, here's a chance to pick your top five favorites. We listed 26 top Texas BBQ joints (in alphabetical order) to choose from. If some of your favorites aren't listed, just add a comment to this blog post & we'll add it in the final results.

Big Bib in San Antonio has gotten some excellent reviews from local publications lately. They recently started using Angus brisket and it made a HUGE difference. Pulled pork is very good as are the ribs and chicken. Sides are as good or better than most joints.

North Main BBQ in Euless. Consistently outstanding ribs. Brisket is great if you stick to the burnt ends (which I do). Chicken is nice and so is the potato salad. Maybe not top 4 but certainly top 5 in my book.

Clarks in Tioga Tx best I have ever had. And I have had a lot. tried all those places in
Lockhart a few years ago. Blacks was the only one that was even ok. The rest are just
running on rep. But there BBQ sucked.

Talking about running on rep. Clarks is the definition. BBQ has gone down hill quick.

The list if heavy on the 'Neu-Be-Que' spots... most of which will be gone in 5-10 years, while ignoring some of the great traditional spots that don't meet 'current' tastes/trends/fads.

My Texas rancher-farmer grandfather probably wouldn't eat most of the neubeque meats that are all the rage right now, considering them to be dangerously undercooked. Cattle-raising has changed a lot in the last 50 years, and most of his fears (hookworm) would be uncalled for, but to ignore the style is to ignore the true traditions of Texas barbecue.

My vote for the best BBQ in Texas is Lemon's Bar B Q in Brownwood, TX. Your "Posse" can't really make a good assessment of the best in Texas when they only cover about a third of the state and that third is in East Texas. There's a lot of good BBQ in West Texas (That's west of I-35) and I've had some in El Paso and Amarillo and Midland and Odessa and Abilene and Lubbock and San Angelo and lots and lots of smaller towns...so get out and try some good west Texas BBQ before making any statements about the best in Texas.... 😉

The best place I have ever had great BBQ is in Cresson, Texas at BBQ on the Brazos. I have been
there several times and it is always the same GREAT. Outstanding ribs and brisket, not to mention
the cornbread salad
